SheaStrong is MelAnu’s social impact initiative focused on empowering women across the shea value chain in Northern Ghana.
Through SheaStrong, we are creating sustainable opportunities, improving livelihoods, and building a more inclusive and equitable system for the women behind one of Africa’s most valuable natural resources.
A STORY THAT INSPIRES OUR WORK
SheaStrong is inspired by real experiences and real people.
During field work, our founder encountered women working tirelessly in shea production, one of them being Aunty T (Taamin). Her story reflected the reality of many women in the shea value chain: long hours of physically demanding work, deep knowledge of the craft, yet limited access to fair income and opportunities.
Her strength, resilience, and dedication became a turning point.
Aunty T’s story is a reminder of why SheaStrong exists, to ensure that the women behind shea are not just seen, but supported, empowered, and given the opportunity to thrive.
WHY SHEASTRONG EXISTS
Across many shea-producing communities, women are at the heart of the work; from collecting shea nuts to processing butter, yet they often receive the least value.
Limited access to training, resources, and fair markets continues to restrict their earning potential. SheaStrong exists to change that.
We believe that when women are supported, equipped, and fairly compensated, entire communities are transformed.
OUR IMPACT TODAY
Today, through the SheaStrong Initiative, MelAnu is proud to support 50 women across the shea value chain.
From sourcing to processing, these women are part of a growing system designed to create sustainable income, build capacity, and improve livelihoods.
And this is just the beginning.
WHAT WE DO
Economic Empowerment
We create income opportunities by integrating women directly into MelAnu’s supply and production chain.
Capacity Building
We provide ongoing training in:
- Shea processing and quality improvement
- Hygiene and safe production practices
- Financial literacy and business skills
- Skill trainings like black soap training, batik, etc.
Ethical Sourcing
We source shea responsibly from women-led groups, ensuring fair value and transparency across the supply chain.
Health & Wellbeing Support
We support access to basic healthcare through initiatives such as NHIS enrollment and community support systems.
OUR IMPACT VISION
SheaStrong is designed to build a scalable and sustainable impact model.
Our goal is to:
- Employ and support 500+ women and youth
- Strengthen the entire shea value chain
- Expand across multiple communities in Northern Ghana
